Kenya’s land sector has seen major legal changes in 2025 aimed at improving transparency, protecting public land, and expanding access to justice for affected communities.

Parliament recently passed amendments requiring all public land transactions to be published in the Kenya Gazette before registration. This move is designed to curb fraudulent allocations and ensure greater public accountability in the management of public assets.

In a significant ruling, the High Court also removed the time limit for filing historical land injustice claims, allowing the National Land Commission to investigate past land grievances without restriction. This decision opens the door for communities and individuals whose claims were previously locked out by statutory deadlines.

Government agencies have additionally intensified efforts to recover grabbed public land, secure school and public-institution titles, and waive interest on long-pending settlement fees to fast-track issuance of title deeds.
